Neighbors Help Wheelchair-Bound Woman Nightly

Kathy Felt was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis back in 1978 and was able to manage her illness with help from her sons. But by 2006, her MS had progressed and she needed help getting in and out of bed each day. Felt decided the schedule was too much for her sons and considered moving into a nursing home, but her friend and backyard neighbor, Keith Pugmire didn’t want to see that happen.

He asked how he could help her and the family out and they decided the best way would be to have a couple men come over every night to lift Felt into bed. Pugmire enlisted help from friends and members of his church and they formed a group of around 60 volunteers who’ve been taking turns helping her get to bed every night for the last 10 years.

The Sandy, Utah neighbors’ nightly ritual allows Felt to sleep in her own bed and avoid the expense of nursing homes. She says she’s overwhelmed by the outpouring of help she’s received from her neighbors over the past 10 years. "I'm just so grateful for the friendship that I have with them," she says. "You just can't put a price on that."
