Social Media Linked To Higher Depression Risk

Maybe it's best if our kids spend a little less time on social media these days. A new British study links social media to a higher risk of depression among teenaged girls.

Researchers studied more than ten-thousand teens and found that girls were twice as likely as boys to show signs of depression after using social media. They blame that finding on online harassment and disturbed sleep. The study showed that 14-year-old girls were the biggest users, typically logging onto social media for more than three hours a day.

The study also found that 12 percent of light social media users and 38 percent of heavy social media users (five-plus hours a day) showed signs of having more severe depression.

Lauren Alaina

Lauren Alaina is taking a break from social media and shares that she plans to do some soul searching during her time away. The singer shared the news with a throwback photo of herself, noting how Lauren in that picture didn’t care what other people thought of her.

“This Lauren didn’t care if she wore boy clothes. She preferred it actually,” she writes. “She didn’t know the future. It’s ups and downs. The happiness and pain it held. She didn’t know about heartbreak or loss. She didn’t know how cruel people can be or how much words can hurt, but she didn’t care what people thought of her or her boy clothes.” She continues, “She was happy and sure of herself. She knew she wanted to write songs and sing them. She loved fiercely and boldly. And most importantly, she knew how to smile through a mom bob.”

Lauren says that her goal now is “to live every day to be more like her,” adding, “I’m looking behind every rock and corner for her this year, and I’m going to find her.”
