Michael Butcher loves turtles… more specifically, he loves the “Teenage Mutant Ninja” kind. In fact, he’s such a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” fan that he now owns over 1,000 turtles.
What started as a love for a television show turned into an effort to provide sanctuary for abused and abandoned turtles. “Some of them are in a hell of a state when they come in because of how they’ve been kept,” Butcher explains, adding that the British government is killing off the species as part of the Invasive Species Act. His hope is to get enough donations, almost $7,000 a year, to be eligible to register as a charity, in order to pursue his larger dream of building turtle sanctuaries across Britain.
For now, he’s starting small, bringing in just over $50 a year. He says the financial strain can be a lot, but it’s all worth it to help his slow but steady friends.
