A Mexico City market restaurant recently put tarantula tacos on the menu for $27 a pop, which is a whole lot more than your average street taco. The eatery posted a video on Facebook showing a chef torching one of the spiders until blackened. But Mexican authorities weren’t happy - it turns out, the Mexican red rump tarantula is a protected species.
It seems these spiders are under threat of extinction so the EPA in Mexico came out to investigate. So while you can’t get your hands on a tarantula taco anymore, the menu also features other creepy crawlies like grasshoppers, worms, and ant eggs, so you can still get your freaky food fix.
