The Most And Least Fit Cities In America

These days more and more people are trying to get healthy and fit, but it seems folks in some places are more successful at it than others, and a new report identifies which cities in the country are doing their best at staying fit.

The 2019 American Fitness Index, released by the American College of Sports Medicine, is out, ranking the 100 largest cities on factors like preventative health behaviors, and levels of chronic disease conditions, along with community resources and policies that support physical activity.

Topping the list for a second year in a row is is Arlington, Virginia, which scored high for personal fitness, thanks to 92% of residents saying they exercised in the previous month, as well as a third ranking within aerobic and strength guidelines. The city also reports low rates of smoking, poor physical health, and pedestrian fatalities.

  • As for the least-fit states, Oklahoma, City is once again at the bottom of the list, thanks to higher levels of smoking, obesity and people with high blood pressure.
