Inside the Ice Rays with the Voice Behind the Action

BigFrankShow2GO: "Puck Drops on Hockey Season: Inside the Ice Rays with the Voice Behind the Action"
Tuesday, August 26, 2025 - Available on iHeartRadio

Hockey season is heating up in the Coastal Bend, and we sit down with Joey Erickson, the "Voice of the Corpus Christi Ice Rays," to talk about everything fans need to know for the upcoming season.

This Saturday's Free Preview: The countdown is on for the Ice Rays Red vs. Black Game this Saturday at the American Bank Center. Puck drops at 11 a.m. with free admission—your chance to check out the new squad, explore the kids' zone, and secure tickets for opening weekend. It's the perfect introduction for families who've never experienced live hockey.

Opening Weekend Details: We dive into the September 19th and 20th opening weekend festivities, including the can't-miss $1 beer night on the 19th and the free tailgate party on the 20th. Joey explains how the team is working to make hockey more accessible and family-friendly than ever before.

Growing the Game in South Texas: For newer fans, Joey breaks down what the Ice Rays are all about—playing in the NAHL, a Tier II junior league focused on developing players for college hockey and beyond. We discuss the unique challenge of growing hockey in South Texas, where ice is something you put in your sweet tea, not something you skate on.

Family-First Approach: Joey shares insights into the new Kids Zone and the team's strategy for attracting first-time families to games. From making the experience approachable for hockey newcomers to creating an atmosphere where parents feel comfortable bringing kids, the Ice Rays are building something special in the Coastal Bend.

Merchandise and More: We also touch on the team's brand-new online store at ShopIceRays.com, featuring expanded merchandise options and new logo variations for fans to represent their team year-round.

The Voice Behind the Calls: As the play-by-play announcer, Joey gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring the excitement of live hockey to radio listeners and how he helps translate the fast-paced action for audiences still learning the game.

This conversation captures the excitement building around Ice Rays hockey and provides everything you need to know to become part of the growing hockey community in South Texas. Whether you're a lifelong fan or have never seen a puck drop, this episode will get you ready for what promises to be an exciting season.

Desalination Delays, Pumpkin Spice Invasion & Texas Chooses Pecan

Desalination Delays, Pumpkin Spice Invasion & Texas Chooses Pecan Over Basic"
Monday, August 25, 2025 - Available on iHeartRadio

It's National Banana Split Day, giving you the perfect Monday ice cream excuse, and we're just 7 days from Labor Day marking summer's unofficial end. On this date in 1939, The Wizard of Oz was released nationally, and we're celebrating birthdays for JoDee Messina (55) and Billy Ray Cyrus (64).

Major Local Infrastructure News: The desalination vote has been delayed. Two critical agenda items for Corpus Christi's Inner Harbor Water Treatment Campus—our major desalination project—have been pushed from August 26th to September 2nd council meeting. One involves design contracts and costs, the other covers financial agreements with the Texas Water Development Board for low-interest loan funding. Staff say the delay gives council more time to review state regulator responses. This desalination project is huge for our long-term water strategy around affordability, reliability, and sustainability.

Big Renovations: The Ortiz Center at the Port is getting a $17 million facelift. Originally a cotton warehouse when the port opened, it's being refreshed top to bottom and will reopen to the public in January. Meanwhile, Kingsville breaks ground soon on their first new fire station in nearly 70 years—the last one was built in 1955. The new facility will house four emergency vehicles and dramatically cut response times, with completion expected by next September.

Pumpkin Spice vs Texas Taste: It's still summer but pumpkin spice is already invading. DoorDash reveals pumpkin spice isn't Texas's top fall flavor—we prefer pecan. Makes sense: pumpkin spice may be loud, but pecan's got soul. Creamer sales spike 1,400% every fall, but Texas stays true to our roots.

Hero Story: 16-year-old Joshua Gomes saved his entire family when his dad went into cardiac arrest while driving on a Massachusetts highway. Joshua jumped forward, safely stopped the car, and used CPR skills from health class to keep his father alive until paramedics arrived. His dad now has a pacemaker and doesn't remember the incident, but thanks to Joshua's quick thinking, a potential tragedy became a survival story.

Water Politics, Deer Smuggling & Why Kevin McCallister is Coming to Austin

BigFrankShow2GO Friday Afternoon Edition: "Water Politics, Deer Smuggling & Why Kevin McCallister is Coming to Austin"
Friday Afternoon, August 22, 2025 - Available on iHeartRadio

A deep dive into the week's biggest Texas stories, plus some surprising entertainment news and personal reflections on nearly three decades in radio.

The Water Crisis Continues: Corpus Christi Water COO Drew Molly announced his resignation this week, departing September 3rd for a Houston leadership position. This marks another significant chapter in our city's ongoing water challenges—from conservation efforts to boil notices to reservoir management. Rather than engaging in social media shouting matches, maybe it's time we step back and actually educate ourselves on these complex issues.

Texas Political Landscape: The Texas Senate is voting today on congressional redistricting plans designed to be more GOP-friendly, with State Senator Phil King warning it'll be a long day but ultimately up to voters to decide. Meanwhile, Dallas Congressman Colin Allred believes he can become the first Democrat to win statewide office in decades, citing internal polling showing he'd beat Ken Paxton by a narrow margin—though public polls tell a different story.

Billion-Dollar Scandal: Texas's white-tail deer hunting industry has been rocked by a massive illegal breeding investigation. Texas Parks and Wildlife made 14 arrests leading to 1,400 criminal charges after discovering ringleaders allegedly forged reports to smuggle animals around the state, circumventing disease testing and risking Chronic Wasting Disease outbreaks.

Transportation Dreams: The push for passenger rail along the I-35 corridor is gaining new life through a TxDOT working group examining why the Lone Star Rail District failed and how to fix it. Legislative funding attempts died on the House floor during the regular session.

Entertainment Coming to Austin: Mark your calendars for some nostalgic fun—Elizabeth Berkley brings "An Evening with Elizabeth Berkley" to the Paramount Theatre October 9th for Showgirls' 30th anniversary, with behind-the-scenes stories and personal memories. Tickets on sale Friday at 10am. Plus, Macaulay Culkin hits Bass Concert Hall November 29th for a 35th anniversary Home Alone screening—tickets Friday at 11am.

Personal Milestones: Celebrating my 9th wedding anniversary with my amazing wife Addie this  past week—3,285 days of love, laughter, and a marriage like fine wine that gets better with age and occasionally gives her a headache. Also reflecting on National Radio Day and the incredible honor of being inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame last year, sharing my acceptance speech audio from that special night.

Anniversary Gold, German Cart Racing & Why Your Home Decor is Ugly

Anniversary Gold, German Cart Racing & Why Your Home Decor is Apparently Ugly
Wednesday, August 20, 2025 - Available on iHeartRadio

It's National Bacon Lovers' Day, which explains why vegetarian friends are avoiding us with the same intensity we avoid exercise—their salads truly feel safe today! Plus, National Radio Day gives us a chance to celebrate nearly 29 years of me somehow surviving on-air in Corpus Christi since July 20, 1996.

Personal Milestone: Happy 9th Anniversary to my beautiful bride Addie! It's been 3,285 days of love, laughter, and figuring out why we own 14 different types of Yeti mugs. Our marriage is like fine wine—it gets better with age and occasionally gives her a headache. She's still my favorite person to argue over the TV remote with. Here's hoping the next nine years bring us a second remote!

Local Updates That Matter: TxDOT is hosting public hearings for the US 77 interstate upgrade proposal—today 4:30-6:30pm at Refugio County Expo Center, tomorrow same time at Woodsboro School Cafeteria. Tonight, catch the Hooks as the "Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits" taking on Frisco RoughRiders at 6:35pm, with special fundraising efforts for Ingram Little League's flood recovery through jersey auctions, 50/50 raffles, and boot collections and more at CCHooks.com.

Hockey Season Approaches: The Corpus Christi IceRays are making hockey more family-friendly this season! During home game weeks, adult Family Section tickets include a free kid's ticket, plus $5 student tickets available day-of-game with valid ID. Home opener is September 19th—details at GoIceRays.com.

Radio Reflections: Being inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame last year was an incredible honor, and somehow y'all are still tolerant of my voice after nearly three decades. Behind-the-scenes truth: the coffee here is terrible, but the job remains a blessing beyond measure.

Viral Video Madness: Interior designer Nicolas Fairford went viral on TikTok listing five "ugly" things you probably have in your home—most people think his list is ridiculous. Meanwhile, Germany has a TV competition where women push shopping carts toward targets for points, complete with dramatic commentary. Yes, this exists, and yes, it's as entertaining as it sounds.

Win Big: iHeartRadio Music Festival trip to Vegas plus $1000 tomorrow at 9am, 1pm & 5pm! Don't forget to nominate outstanding teachers for $5000 classroom funds at iHeartRadio.com/Teachers.

Whataburger Wins, Vegas BBQ Blasphemy & Why Gen X Still Prints Everything

BigFrankShow2GO Podcast: "Whataburger Wins, Vegas BBQ Blasphemy & Why Gen X Still Prints Everything
Monday, August 18, 2025 - Available on iHeartRadio

It's National Fajita Day, honoring the true heroes—the tortillas that hold it all together! Without them, we'd just be awkwardly eating veggies and meat with our hands and pretending it's totally normal. Plus, with 14 days until Labor Day, we're counting down to when everyone pretends they've always been passionate about not wearing white.

Win Big: iHeartRadio Music Festival trip to Vegas plus $1000 at 9am, 1pm & 5pm! Tonight's Powerball: $605 million!

Local Headlines That Matter: The City of Corpus Christi is looking at water-rate hikes tied to the Mary Rhodes Pipeline capacity boost—changes coming next year. We're also getting a new city logo featuring the new Harbor Bridge instead of the old one, unveiling at this week's city council meeting. Baseball fans, get excited: Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez starts his rehab assignment with the Hooks tomorrow as designated hitter after being out since May 3rd with a hand fracture.

Gen X Wisdom: Skip the motivational quotes today—instead, let's celebrate the truth about Gen X: we still print boarding passes because we survived "Microsoft Word has encountered an error" watching our term papers vanish at 1 AM. We learned technology will betray you at the worst possible moment, which is why we still hit 'Save' every three seconds like a nervous twitch.

Food Fight Results: The bros have spoken and Texas already knew it—Whataburger officially wins as America's best late-night fast food! BroBible ranked it #1 over In-N-Out, Steak 'n Shake, and Jack in the Box. Why? Bigger burgers, better taste, non-disappointing fries, spicy ketchup, and those glorious 2 AM taquitos. USA Today readers also voted Whataburger into the Top 10 best burgers nationally. Remember: nothing good happens after midnight... except Whataburger.

BBQ Blasphemy Alert: Here's news that might burn some brisket—Las Vegas was named America's #1 BBQ city with 107 top-rated spots, supposedly beating Franklin Barbecue in Austin.  Somewhere in Austin, a pitmaster just threw down his tongs in disgust.

America Goes Sober: Americans are putting the brakes on booze—only 54% drink alcohol now, the lowest in 90 years of Gallup polling. Every demographic is cutting back, with two-thirds of 18-34 year-olds thinking even moderate drinking is unhealthy. The next generation is more "Topo Chico and tacos" than "shots and karaoke." Don't worry—us narrow-minded Texans will still find ways to wash down brisket with something stronger than sweet tea.

The Good News: Two California plumbers saved a grandmother's life when she was attacked by a swarm of bees. They caught her before she hit the ground, used a fire extinguisher to drive away the bees, then lured the swarm into their van while enduring dozens of stings until help arrived. Quick thinking literally saved her life.

  • Water Street
  • U&I Restaurant
  • Snoopy's
  • Catfish Charlies
  • There are more but these were the only one's that I have dined at recently so I thought I would include them. Now I want some Water Street!
Pool Closure Notice The Corpus Christi Natatorium is shut down for the rest of August due to planned upgrades and maintenance. Reopening September 1st. Use Collier Pool or Bill Witt Aquatic Center instead.

Retail Update Claire's at La Palmera Mall is closing as part of nationwide downsizing. The company plans to close over 1,000 stores and is seeking buyers for 800+ other locations.

KENNEDY CENTER HONORS 2025 President Trump announced this year's honorees, including:
  • George Strait - The King of Country and Texas icon!
  • Sylvester Stallone
  • Gloria Gaynor
  • KISS
  • Michael Crawford (Phantom of the Opera)

WEIRD NEWS ALERT Horned Rabbits in Colorado - Northern Colorado residents are spotting wild rabbits with black "horns and tentacles" growing from their heads. Don't panic! Colorado Parks and Wildlife says it's SPV virus, spread by fleas and ticks. The horn-like growths are benign and disappear once the bunnies' immune systems fight it off. No risk to humans, but maybe don't pet the horned bunnies.

RELATIONSHIP ADVICE Forget Couples Therapy - Try Gossip! New study shows couples who gossip together feel closer, whether talking smack after parties or reliving funny moments. Basically, if you and your partner roll your eyes at the same people, congratulations... you're soulmates.

BigFrankShow2GO: Aliens, Tattoo Regrets & Why Corpus Christi is Hot Right Now

Thursday, August 14, 2025 - Available on iHeartRadio

It's National Tattoo Removal Day—a special shoutout to all the tattoo artists who've perfected the art of "I told you so" in ink! Here's to those 2 AM decisions that looked cool then but not so much at your job interview.

Alien Alert! An object traveling 135,000 mph is heading straight for Earth, arriving in about 115 days. A Harvard professor thinks it *might* be an alien spacecraft. NASA says it'll pass at a "safe" distance—but safe according to who? That's just enough time to finish Christmas shopping... or build a bunker.

Corpus Christi Making Headlines: Travel + Leisure Magazine just named Corpus Christi "America's next great beach destination," praising our natural wonders, top-tier food scene, and historic sites. This is a sharp contrast to FinanceBuzz calling us the third-most boring city—apparently, we're either the most exciting boring place or the most boring exciting place!

Local Water News: City Council unanimously approved spending up to $169 million for water rights from the Evangeline Groundwater Project in San Patricio County. This could deliver 24 million gallons per day from brackish groundwater—because in South Texas, water is getting to where it is worth more than oil.

Nostalgia Corner: Texas Monthly reminds us that Corpus Christi was THE windsurfing destination in the '80s and '90s. The U.S. Open Windsurfing Regatta at Cole Park drew world champions and TV coverage, but by the late '90s, the sport collapsed—too expensive, too technical, and too hard for beginners. Now a few dedicated locals keep the dream alive while kitesurfing rules the bay.

Country Music Updates: Sad news from Bakersfield—Buck Owens' Crystal Palace, the legendary honky-tonk that's been a country music pilgrimage site for nearly 30 years, will soon close its doors. Meanwhile, Luke Bryan is proving Friday nights aren't just for concerts—they're for family, as he prioritizes his son Bo's high school football games over everything else.

Special Programming:
Friday:  Stand Up To Cancer special featuring Dolly Parton, Sheryl Crow, Jon Pardi, Jelly Roll, and Dan + Shay
Sunday 7pm:  Band Together Texas concert live from Austin with Miranda Lambert, Parker McCollum, Cody Johnson, Ronnie Dunn, Lyle Lovett, and more

Win Big:  Your shot at iHeartRadio Music Festival tickets with Tim McGraw and Jelly Roll, plus $1000 at 9am, 1pm, and 5pm!

BigFrankShow2GO: Brain Rot Summer, Labubu Fever & Why Reading Makes You Hot

Brain Rot Summer, Labubu Fever & Why Reading Makes You Hot
Big Frank Show 2GO - Wednesday, August 13, 2025 - Available on iHeartRadio

It's International Lefthanders Day, and we're celebrating the only people who can use right-handed scissors better than righties while maintaining smudge-free handwriting! Plus, with just 19 days until Labor Day, we're preparing to celebrate hard work by doing absolutely none.

Local Updates That Matter: Starting tomorrow, I-37 detours near the Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi will test your patience, so plan accordingly. Our water situation remains critical with combined lake levels at just 14.5%, keeping us in Stage 3 restrictions—time to perfect those shorter showers and fix those leaky faucets. On a brighter note, Brewster Street Icehouse opened their newest island location with live music, sunset views, and a playground for the kids.

The End of an Era: AOL is finally pulling the plug on dial-up internet this September 30th. After ruling the internet in 1999 with 18 million subscribers, they're logging off for good—presumably so someone's mom can finally use the phone.

Gen Z vs. Cereal: Are Gen Z cereal killers? Cereal sales have dropped 13% since 2021, and it's not just because they can't wake up before noon. Maybe if we start packaging avocado toast in boxes, we'll see a comeback.

The Labubu Craze: These fang-faced dolls in mystery boxes are America's hottest toy, with crazy resale prices and fake knockoffs everywhere. But sometimes a $20 fake from a truck stop in Pleasanton is worth it for a 6-year-old's smile—because authenticity can't buy happiness.

Surprising Science: Juggling isn't just for clowns—it's a brain workout that boosts neuroplasticity and keeps you sharp. Broccoli might prevent lung disease (but you still have to eat it). And ladies, 98% of women find men who read attractive, so maybe ditch that crypto portfolio discussion for a good book at the coffee shop.

Brain Rot Summer: Forget "Hot Girl Summer" or "Brat Summer"—2025 is officially "Brain Rot Summer." No viral anthems, no clear vibes, just scattered cultural chatter and the mental deterioration from overconsumbing trivial online content. The only six-pack we're working on is in the fridge.

Good News Spotlight: Constable Kevin Lloyd's patience and compassion literally saved a life when he spent over an hour convincing an elderly man to seek medical help. Doctors said he wouldn't have survived another 24 hours—proof that taking time to connect changes everything.

Win Big: Your chance for iHeartRadio Music Festival tickets with Tim McGraw and Jelly Roll, plus $1000 at 9am, 1pm, and 5pm!

BigFrankShow2GO: Where current events meet comedy, and brain rot meets brilliant insights—available on iHeartRadio.
