Lamont Landers stopped by The Bobby Bones Show for the first time to talk about his music, how his voice does not match his appearance, his upcoming project and perform!
Landers was a Season 14 America’s Got Talent contestant who is from the Huntsville, Alabama area. Something that has always surprised his listeners is that his voice does not match his appearance, and he understands why. He sounds like an older R&B Blues artist from New Orleans but is a skinny white guy with red hair. Most people do a double take when they hear him singing and will tell him that he does not look the way he sounds. He called it an amazing annoyance when he posted videos and people commented “fake” about his voice. He loves being able to flip that comment and prove to people he isn’t lip syncing.
He started singing when he was 19 out of necessity. He was in a band and the lead singer got sick, so he stepped up. It turned out he wasn’t bad, so he continued. Growing up, a lot of southern soul music was played in his house, and it greatly influenced his sound. He dropped out of college to pursue his music career, which his parents weren’t happy about, but they supported him. He’s been able to make a living playing with his band and he’s started to feel his career rise because he’s been getting a lot more opportunities and attention lately.
Currently, Landers is promoting his music on his TikTok while playing weekend shows and doing a gig every Monday playing at a restaurant called The Open Bottle in Madison, Alabama. He’s also been in the studio with Zac Crockrell, the bass player from Alabama Shakes, and they are working on their album called Players Club. It’s been a three-year work in progress for them, but they are going to start shopping it to record labels soon. The unique thing about Landers when he performs solo is he plays a riff or melody on the guitar and records it to play in a loop track, while also using his peddle and drum board.
While in studio, he played his song “Dear Friend,” which is about how after going through a divorce he got into a weird spot where he didn’t know if he’d feel the same things he felt before, but then you do, and it’s an amazing feeling.
