What's your favorite romantic comedy?

Scores like How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Sweet Home Alabama, Practical Magic, The Proposal, The Other Woman, and Crazy, Stupid, Love are iconic, but what about the films that shaped the genre and paved the way for these stories?

Thousands of romantic comedies inciting love and laughter have been produced over the years, with beloved favorites still being made today.

From The Princess Bride's "Death cannot stop true love," to Bringing Up Baby's "In moments of quiet I'm strangely drawn to you," romantic comedies have been shaping expectations for meet-cutes, dates, and romantic connections for the last century, but only one title tops the rest.

According to a list compiled by Rotten Tomatoes, the best romantic comedy of all time is 1940's The Philadelphia Story, starring silver screen legends Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and Katharine Hepburn.

Other titles that made the list include 1940's His Girl Friday and The Shop Around The Corner, 1941's The Lady Eve, and 1934's It Happened One Night, to round out the top five.

Here's what Rotten Tomatoes had to say about the plot behind the best romantic comedy of all time:

"This classic romantic comedy focuses on Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn), a Philadelphia socialite who has split from her husband, C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), due both to his drinking and to her overly demanding nature. As Tracy prepares to wed the wealthy George Kittredge (John Howard), she crosses paths with both Dexter and prying reporter Macaulay Connor (James Stewart). Unclear about her feelings for all three men, Tracy must decide whom she truly loves."
